Shockwave Therapy
What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy, is administered to tendons or muscles through the skin using a small handheld device similar to an ultrasound wand. This therapy can jump-start the body's ability to regenerate new tissue and decrease pain by directly stimulating nerves at the injury site. It's often prescribed for sports injuries such as golfer's elbow, tennis elbow, pulled hamstring, and for pain in soft tissues, such as plantar fasciitis. It is also recommended for treating breast capsular contracture, which occurs when scar tissue around a breast implant becomes unusually hard.
Shockwave therapy may be used to:
Increase circulation around injured soft tissues
Break down calcified deposits
Stimulate cells that generate new bone tissue and connective tissue
Reduce pain by overstimulating nerve endings in the affected area
The therapy is mildly uncomfortable for most people. We start at a low level and increase until we reach your personal therapeutic range, maintaining about 2,000 pulses in the treated area. The process takes about 15 minutes. Treatment is recommended 1-2 times per week for 4-6 weeks. Commonly treated areas include the elbow, hip, knee, leg, ankle, foot, hand, shoulder, and hamstrings.
